For the third year in succession a pupil from Ponteland Middle School has won the District prize in the Lions' Peace Poster competition. This is no mean feat when the District covers all of Scotland and north east England as far as Filey. The school put in 17 entries but the clear winner was 12 years old Hannah Elkadi, a bright, articulate young girl with an artistic pedigree. Her father, born in Egypt, is a professor of architecture and Hannah says she is following in her mother's and grandmother's creative footsteps. The budding artists get encouragement in spadefuls in the out-of-hours Art Club run by teacher Liz MacWhinney. The prizes were presented by the Ponteland Lions President at a recent school assembly. The school also received a plaque to keep for a year. Hannah narrowly missed winning the national prize and came a close second.
