Village shares celebration with the Queen

PONTELAND’S own heritage will be celebrated during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend.
Coun Robin Ramsay, who is leading the town council’s efforts to mark the Monarch’s 60 years on the throne, told members that the Ponteland Local History Society has agreed to put on a display to show how the area has developed in that time.
It will be held in the Memorial Hall between Saturday, June 2 and Monday, June 4.
Approval has been received for bunting to go up in Ponteland village and Darras Hall and the authority will now seek suppliers. It will look to establish a link with the Diamond Inn, which is staging its own event on June 4.
Coun Ramsay said that all the schools in the area are heavily involved and as well as providing signatures for the Loyal Address, pupils are doing 200 to 250 drawings.
Members of local organisations will be asked to put pen to paper for the address and there will also be public signing sessions at Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and The Co-op next month.
The lighting of Jubilee Beacon on top of St Mary’s Church and at Coates Green will take place on June 4 and there will be fireworks and other festivities on the green that evening.
