Towns fall silent to honour the fallen

MORPETH and Ponteland will fall silent to honour the fallen at Remembrance events.
A two-minute silence will be held in Morpeth Market Place at 11am tomorrow to pay tribute to members of the Armed Forces who have given their lives in service to their country.
Before then, the buglers and standard bearers will take position, there will be addresses by Rev Tony Curtis and Mayor Phil Taylor and the Last Post will be sounded.
There will also be an Armistice Day ceremony at County Hall, Loansdean, at the same time.
War veterans and representatives of the RAF, Royal British Legion and Royal Regiment of Fusiliers as well as Northumberland County Council will join together for the service, which will include the laying of poppies at the war memorial.
Anyone wishing to attend the ceremony is asked to assemble at the memorial near the entrance to County Hall at 10.40am.
Those who would like to lay a wreath should arrive at reception by 10.30am for a short briefing.
On Sunday, a parade will set off from Morpeth Town Hall at 10.35am to the Cenotaph via Bridge Street, Castle Square and Castle Bank.
It will be led by Morpeth Pipe Band, which will play a traditional air at the service, and others who will be marching include councillors, Freemen of Morpeth, Honorary Aldermen, the Royal British Legion, veterans and representatives of the Armed Forces and emergency services.
The service will include a prayer by the Rector of Morpeth, Rev Robert McLean, the exhortation, the placing of wreaths and the singing of the national anthem, led by King Edward VI School student Rebecca Megwa.
On arrival back at the Town Hall, the parade will march past and commanders will call 'eyes left' for the Mayor to take the salute.
In Ponteland, the Act of Remembrance will be held outside the Memorial Hall, from 10.55am. A parade, marshalled by the Officer Commanding 733 Squadron Air Training Corps, will travel to the building from the Leisure Centre at 10.45am.
Representatives of the Ponteland Clergy will take the service. At 11am a two minutes' silence will be observed at the War Memorial, after which wreaths will be laid.

£500,000 APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR MEMORIAL HALL

£500,000 APPEAL LAUNCHED FOR PONTELAND MEMORIAL HALL

The 90-year old Memorial Hall is showing its age and a major refurbishment is required to make it fit for purpose in the twenty first century

Half a million pounds, £500,000 are needed for a new central heating system, insulation, extensive repairs, a fully updated interior and removal of the front canopy to allow for a redesigned front entrance.  The Town Council has plans to move into a new rear extension where they would be easily available to all residents.

The building of the Hall and the erection of the War Memorial were mooted at a public meeting in 1918 to 'remember the men from Ponteland District who had fallen and given their all for their country's cause'.  In 1945 another 24 names were added to the Memorial.  When funds were raised after the Great War Darras Hall had hardly begun, the village population was much smaller but by means of donations, jumble sales, bazaars and a Carnival day the money came in.  Ponteland knew all about the Big Society long before it became a political slogan.  Surely today, the affluent Darras Hall and a town of more than 11,000 residents can raise the money.  Major work needs major funding!

The Hall is the focus of many village events.  Last year there were more than 40,000 users of the Hall and perhaps an updated venue would attract many more.  A venue to go for!

The Hall is run by a small committee who need your ideas.  Can you help? Here are some ideas for starters.

All clubs and societies using the Hall to make a donation and perhaps organise a fund-raising event.
Individuals to donate in memory of a loved one.
Corporate donations by village business.
Village fund-raising day.
Join the Hall committee to feed in your ideas.  Have you expertise useful to fund raising or to the work that needs doing?
Just give!  Amounts from £5 - £5000 and more are all welcome.
No limit on donations.  Are there residents who singly or together could fund one of the renewals?  Named after them?
All contributions recognised.  Gift aid for taxpayers.

Please contact the treasurer, David Cobb, for more information. Tel 01661- 871430 or davidcobb2@tiscali.co.uk

MEMORIAL HALL - END OF AN ERA!

Lawrence and June Tallen have retired as Caretakers of the Memorial Hall after 27 years service.

Regular user groups of the Hall, as well as some individuals, contributed to a leaving present of over £1,000. They were represented when Eric Marshall, Chairman of the Memorial Hall Committee, handed over a cheque for £800. In addition a more tangible present, in the form of a Garden Shed, has been delivered and paid for from the contributions.

Unfortunately
Lawrence was confined to his bed but June accepted the gift on behalf of them both.

The new incumbents, Ron and Kathleen Whittington, are now well and truly installed.

Blood Donors Wanted

BLOOD donor sessions will be held in Morpeth and Ponteland this month.
The NHS needs 7,000 voluntary donations of blood every day to meet demand, but only four percent of the eligible population are active donors.
Now NHS Blood and Transplant is hoping more will come forward.

Spokesman Craig Taylor said: "It is important that both existing and new blood donors come forward and donate now and regularly.
"It isn't an exaggeration to call them lifesavers as without them vital supplies of blood wouldn't be available for patients."

Donors can give blood three times a year. The need to be aged 17 to 65, though there is no upper age limit for people who have donated in the last two years, should weigh more than 50kg (7 stone 12lbs) and be in general good health.

The process takes about an hour.

The service will be at Ponteland Memorial Hall in Darras Road on Thursday, June 10, from 2pm to 3.30pm and from 4.15pm to 7pm.

It will be at Storey Park Community Centre in Morpeth on Friday, June 18, from 1.30pm to 3.45pm and from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

To book an appointment in advance call 0300 123 2323 or visit

Ponteland Celebrates Forty Years of History Society

The Ponteland Local History Society was started forty years ago and a special exhibition was held in the Memorial Hall to bring together the diversity of organisations in Ponteland and to celebrate their achievements. It was a special event for the Mayor of Castle Morpeth, Irene Brumwell, who opened the exhibition. Councillor Irene admitted a liking for performing her duties on her home patch, especially since she has lived forty years in Ponteland, remembered some of the ‘old Ponteland’ and seemed to know everyone.

There were forty organisations with fascinating displays of memorabilia and targets – that was the archers! Some had been founded just after the First World War, such as Ponteland WI, the Memorial Hall itself, and the Bowling Club. The Churches and First School had been there longer and the Civic Society was probably the most recently formed. Plants figured in many ways, leeks, fuschias, heathers, the National Conservation Society and the Friends of Ponteland Park. There was a wealth of material and expertise on display in Ponteland and many interested viewers. The Town Council came as well as the County Library service and the Local History Society pulled out all the stops to give a wonderful display of old photographs and items from its archives. Chairman John Turner and Michael Taylor and many others worked hard to put on such a wonderful day. No one in Ponteland can say they are bored. There is so much to belong to, so much to be involved in.

Ponteland Memorial Hall Leek Show

Les Young scooped the first prize in the leek show at the Memorial Hall Leek Show 2008 with leeks which were a country mile ahead of the opposition. He said it was because he grows a prime variety - Cumbrian - for his show leeks. He also knows his onions, scooping firsts in the three different classes. Well done, Les! Second with his leeks was Matt Briggs and third prize went to Hugh Chambers.

Dick Dodsworth is to flowers what Les Young is to vegetables. He says he grew up with the family involved in the commercial growing of flowers and has always had a keen interest. His display of a mixed bunch of flowers and foliage, and then his display of dahlias were both a riot of colour and won the first prizes. He also took first prize with a flowering plant and sneaked a first with his tomatoes.

Ponteland Memorial Hall Leek Show

The Ponteland Memorial Hall Leek Show and social evening was enjoyed by members, partners and guests. The judging was followed by a soup and ham sandwich supper and a testing quiz to identify photos of film stars of a certain vintage compiled by David Morris. The produce and flowers were auctioned off and the many raffle prizes distributed to the lucky ones. The trophy for the best leeks was won by Syd Cowan, the best leek in the show was Dick Dosdsworth's and Dick also won first prize for his spendid bunch of home grown flowers.
